Hiria Te Rangi, our national guest judge for yia!, brings with her 20 years’ experience in the tech industry. Hiria has been involved with BCITO, TradeMe, Westpac and numerous government departments, granting her the experience and skills necessary to judge from a broad perspective.
As the CEO and founder of Whare Hauora, Hiria understands the necessity of innovation in solving problems and finding plausible solutions, while holding deep respect for the struggle of the journey. Hiria’s commitment to innovation in Aotearoa has seen her act as councillor for Internet NZ, lead a TedX talk and reach the semi-finals in TradeMe’s Innovator of the Year awards. She believes, "the answer to your problem is not going to be what everyone else is doing, otherwise they would have solved the problem already – that’s why it’s called innovation and not copying.”
While her background in the tech industry was built from self-determination and textbooks, Hiria stresses that some of the most important skills essential to success are ethics, caring and thinking about others. Her motivation for joining the yia! judge panel is owing to her belief in the futures of our rangatahi, whakataukī – ‘Kaua e mate wheke, mate ururoa.’
