LED strips to assist dyslexic students in reading and writing by using coloured overlays to relax the brain, allowing it to interpret information more easily. The team took home $2000 and invaluabe work experience with Bluelab, Beca and Woods.
The Innovators and their Idea
Hi, I’m Madison Sykes from Tauranga Girls’ College and this year my team BriteNZ came up with iBrite: LED strips that assist dyslexic students in reading and writing. To come up with our idea, we started by brainstorming problems and identified that dyslexia is a widespread issue that needs a modern solution. From there we began to think about possible solutions. Having grown up with dyslexia, I understood the challenges students face and knew we needed a product that students would not be embarrassed to use while also both affordable and effective.
The Internship and the Future
We were absolutely over the moon to discover to win YiA 2018! To be selected from the large number of talented young innovators was an honour. We were stoked to win $2000 and Abbey and I were lucky enough to take advantage of the two week internship that we won as well. We spent the first week with Bluelab and the next week at Woods. Jono from Bluelab prepared us for the experience via a phone call ahead of time and helped with the handover day at Woods, which allowed the Woods team to outline what was in store.
The internship was incredibly valuable: we feel a lot more confident in regards to where we can take our idea now that we are no longer school students. Rather than learning new skills, the internship reinforced what we had learnt in school while providing a practical way of putting the theory we had learnt into practice. We now truly understand how innovation can be applied to every stage of business operations from creating ideas, sourcing resources, production and even team culture.
Thank you so much YIA for this awesome opportunity of a life time. We are so excited about what the future holds for Brite.
